Challenges

Hi there!

As promised, here's a blog post for January 2024. Just going to give you a status update on what's happening at Thimbleberry Studios and ask for some help choosing organizations to donate money to.

Status Update

I have about seven different images bouncing around in my head that I want to turn into prints. I'm working on sketches of three of them, and I've printed small pieces of two that I'll enlarge and add to. Those last two came about because of my participation in @PrinterSolstice, an annual Instagram-based, printmaking challenge. Every year the hosts give a list of weekly prompts to inspire folks, and this year's theme is color.

Here are my contributions so far:
Week 1 "Absence of color" : Linoprint entitled Night Flight, edition of 25 8x10 inch prints
Linoprint of buffleheads migrating at night

Week 2 "Tetradic colors": Monoprint of tree canopy made with stamps

If you'd like more information about what "tetradic colors" means, here's a video I made: Color Combinations

Week 3 "Complementary colors": Linoprint entitled Minds of Their Own, an open variable edition, soon to be added to my online shops. Here's one color combination I've printed.

Octopus in the sea

In case you didn't know, "complementary colors" are colors opposite each other on the color wheel. For the print above, I used the complementary color pair of blue-green and red-orange.

Week 4 "Cool colors": A green and blue version of my Woods of the Lake linoprint

linoprint of wooded island reflected in water

Week 5  - Nothing from me, at least so far.

Week 6 "Monochromatic": My Winter Woods linoprint
linoprint of woods with footprints in snow

When these Instagram challenges help me reach my goals, they are worth the time and effort. I've done a few; probably my favorite was my 2019 100-Day Project entitled "colored pencil drawings on crappy paper," that is until this year's @printersolstice event. I'm enjoying playing with the color theme and seeing how other printmakers are approaching the prompts. Plus I'm finding it a good way to explore ideas for larger prints. The two that I'm going to expand on are the buffleheads from week 1 and the octopus from week 3. Speaking of the octopus...

Donating Earnings

I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed by the challenges facing us these days. The war in Gaza, the upcoming 2024 elections, the accelerating climate change: do I need to go on? I want to help, even if it's just a little bit. At least I'll feel like I'm doing something positive instead of just getting angry and depressed and ranting about it. So, I've decided to raise money by donating all the money I receive for my soon-to-be-available print Minds of Their Own. Because of the global reach of the United States in all matters, I'm researching groups that are working to improve democracy here. More information about this fundraising project in my next newsletter in February, but for now I'd love any suggestions you've got for non-partisan groups working on expanding voter access, outlawing gerrymandering, overturning Citizens United, etc.

In addition, one of the goals I set when establishing my art business last year was to donate a percentage of my earnings every year to organizations that align with my values. It's time to make my donation for 2023. The question is where. I'm looking for an organization that has low overhead costs and is working to protect the environment. If you've got any suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.

That's all from Thimbleberry Studios. I hope your year is starting off well! Thanks again for all your support in every form. I look forward to your suggestions for worthy groups to donate to.

Cheers!

Darby
